DISCORSO DI SUA SANTITÀ PIO XII
ALL'AMBASCIATORE DEGLI STATI UNITI IN ITALIA,
S.E. JAMES DAVID ZELLERBACH
Sala del Tronetto - Sabato, 22 febbraio 1958
We thank Your Excellency for your gracious words in presenting this award, and We would ask you to convey to the President of the George Washington Carver Memorial Institute Our appreciation of the kind thought that prompted his wish to grant it.
It is so true—and she has always been deeply conscious of it—that the Church has a universal mission, confided to her by God, our Saviour, whose will it is, as St. Paul wrote « that all men should be saved and be led to recognize the truth » (1 Tim. 2, 4). Down through the centuries she has contìnued to make her own the message the same intrepid apostle sent to his brethren from this city of Rome : « you must be always humble, always gentle; patient, too, in bearing with one another, as charity bids; eager to preserve that unity the Spirit gives you, whose bond is peace » (Eph. 4, 2-3).
One then will expect, that an association that aims at fostering understanding and concord between peoples will cornmand the Church's sympathy ; and on the occasion of accepting this award We are happy to express Our prayerful good wishes for the success of what the George Washington Carver Memorial Institute purposes to do towards attaining a goal so ardently desired by all men of good will.
